Next time you find yourself ogling the accumulated works on the walls of the Fillmore in San Francisco remember that actually France, not California, is where Poster Art all began! The creation of this astounding collection has its genesis in the enigmatic, self-promotional genius of M. More

Jules Chéret. Chéret was truly committed to the broader dissemination of art amidst the burgeoning middle class in western Europe during the mid to late 19th-century. He is acclaimed as the inventor of three-stone lithography—the printing process that made so many of the vivid, yet inexpensive posters in this collection even possible. He was also an ambitious artist in his own right, and thus the self-promotion… Chéret was able to persuade some very notable artists of his time to contribute work to this collection, and he filled it out with works of his own; approximately 1/4 of the posters in this collection come from his hand, the rest are from the likes of Bonnard, Lefevre, Mucha, Toulouse-Lautrec…. These images are great for printing and framing, decoupage or simply for viewing.
