A lively debate at the Arms & Armor gallery of the Metropolitan Museum with my 12 year-old nephew was the inception of the idea for this collection. More

We were playing a game of "who's the scariest", and had just discerned which were the most menacing amongst the knights and the samurai in the galleries, when a lively argument sprung up as to who would win in a one-on-one combat between the two. Years later while reviewing some Kuniyoshi Samurai prints, I remembered that day at the museum, and went hunting for full-color images of knights. We located Meyrick's Medieval Knights and Armour, and Kottenkamp's, The History of Chivalry and Armour; background images came from various sources such as Hiroshige prints and medieval coloring books. The collection comprises 239 royalty-free images. The figures are cleanly silhouetted, and if you purchase the whole collection you also get many of the backgrounds in vector format. My absolute favorites are image sheets 21, 47, 56 and 63. We've talked a lot about other incongruous pairings to create collections from: think Cowboys and Aliens… More to come...
