The germinal idea for this collection arose whilst perusing tattoo art books for sale at Barnes & Noble in Albuquerque, New Mexico. More

There was a huge selection, yet all of the titles seemed to focus on contemporary practices in a rather arch, yet narrow, vein. I found this a little disappointing and extremely boring considering that body art is virtually a pan-cultural phenomena, that dates from antiquity. With this collection I wanted to present some authentic visions of body art, in situ, as well as to furnish motifs that could be used to make actual tattoos. With an enormous amount of assistance from John Riess we were able to assemble the images in this collection; they are drawn from diverse cultures–Japanese, Chinese, Polynesian, Tribal, Mehndi… Particularly fascinating to me were the Maori portraits by the Czechish painter, Gottfried Lindauer.
